OpenAI’s Upcoming Phone: Is the Era of Apps Over and the Age of Intelligent Agents Beginning?

It seems that Sam Altman and his cohorts at OpenAI are not satisfied with just taking over our browsers and our minds; they are now planning to put “ChatGPT” literally in our pockets! New leaks suggest that the company is not just about to launch another app, but a full-fledged smartphone that redefines our relationship with technology, where artificial intelligence takes the lead instead of the colorful icons we tap on all day long.

An Alliance of Titans to Build the AI “iPhone”

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, whose leaks regarding Apple we have grown accustomed to for their accuracy, has dropped a bombshell. Kuo says that OpenAI is currently working with chip giants MediaTek and Qualcomm to develop a custom processor for its upcoming phone, while Luxshare will handle the joint design and manufacturing. It seems the company wants full control over both hardware and software.

This direction means that OpenAI wants to build its own hardware stack, allowing it to run AI features without the limitations of current systems. With ChatGPT approaching a billion weekly users, owning a dedicated device for daily use seems like the logical next step to dominate the consumer market.

The End of the App Era as We Know It

The revolutionary idea here is not in the screen or the camera, but in how we interact with the device. OpenAI aims to replace traditional apps with “AI Agents.” Currently, Apple and Google control the flow of apps and the type of access they get within the system, which limits AI capabilities. But by owning its own phone, OpenAI will be able to make AI understand everything you do without a middleman.

This vision is not limited to OpenAI; even Carl Pei, CEO of Nothing, anticipates a future where smartphone apps disappear to be replaced by intelligent agents. The idea is simply that you won’t need to open an app to book a ticket or order food; you will ask your phone to do it, and it will act as if it has a brain and digital hands.

When Will We See This Invention in Our Pockets?

Don’t be in a rush to ditch your iPhone 17 just yet! The timeline suggests that final specifications for components and suppliers will be settled by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027. As for mass production of the phone, it is expected to begin in 2028. However, we may not have to wait that long to see the company’s first physical product, as reports indicate the possibility of launching “smart earbuds” in the second half of 2026.

The ultimate goal is a phone that constantly understands the user’s context, combining small AI models that run on-device for privacy and speed, with massive cloud models for complex tasks. In doing so, OpenAI will gain more accurate data about user habits, a priceless treasure in the heated AI race.

Do you think AI is truly capable of killing the traditional app era and taking over our pockets?
