At the recent developer conference, Apple revealed details about its most powerful AI models running directly on devices, but it seems the list of advanced features comes with strict hardware requirements that may frustrate many. If you are planning to upgrade your phone to the standard iPhone 17, you might run into the reality that its 8GB of RAM is no longer sufficient for the full experience of the intelligent Siri assistant in the upcoming iOS 27 update.

The new 12GB rule: Who benefits and who is the victim?
During its announcement of the upgraded AI-based Siri assistant, Apple confirmed that running the most advanced model on-device requires at least 12GB of unified memory. This decision marks the first time Apple has raised the minimum requirements for Apple Intelligence, which had remained fixed at 8GB since its launch two years ago.

This new requirement clearly means that the most advanced Siri features will be exclusive to premium phones only, specifically the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new slim arrival, the iPhone 17 Air. Meanwhile, iPad devices with an M4 chip or later, Macs with an M3 chip or later, and the Apple Vision Pro with an M5 chip will fully support these features. In contrast, the buyer of the base iPhone 17 finds themselves outside this golden circle due to the device being limited to 8GB of RAM.
What exactly will the standard iPhone 17 miss out on?

Some might wonder: what can 12GB of RAM offer that 8GB fails to deliver? The answer lies in two main features that rely entirely on superior local processing of audio and text levels:
First: More expressive Siri voices: This feature allows users to adjust Siri’s tone, expressions, and speech rate to sound extremely natural and human-like, precisely matching their personal preferences.
Second: Advanced voice dictation engine: This is the most practically important feature, as the advanced AI model can instantly convert spoken words into polished, highly accurate written text, automatically handling punctuation, capitalization, and formatting, while reducing spelling errors and understanding complex words in a way that completely transforms the voice-to-text experience.
The bright side: What will remain available to everyone?
Fortunately, this does not mean that users of the standard iPhone 17 (or even iPhone 15 Pro phones and the iPhone 16 series) will be completely isolated from the AI revolution. All other features announced in the updated Siri package will continue to work normally on devices with 8GB of RAM.

These features available to everyone include: understanding the user’s personal context, awareness of what is on the screen, web-based answers, the all-new dedicated Siri app, Visual Intelligence, and Writing Tools. In other words, owners of phones with 8GB of RAM will get the new smart assistant with its modern interface, but they will miss out on the superior dictation accuracy and the more flexible, expressive voices.
