In an irony that occurs frequently in the tech world, it seems that the best and most accurate leaks do not come from assembly plants or analysts, but rather from Apple’s own software kitchens! While everyone was anticipating the company’s conferences to announce its latest devices, the company committed an unintentional software blunder that revealed one of its most controversial and highly anticipated products: AirPods equipped with built-in cameras.

How did system files expose Apple’s secret plans?
The story began when Apple released the Release Candidate for the macOS 26.7 Tahoe update. While all eyes were on the latest releases, code diggers decided to examine the hidden depths of the system, where researcher Aaron Perris found a short promotional video file that Apple engineers forgot to delete before sending out the update.
The 13-second video clip provides the first real look at AirPods equipped with cameras while they are in operation and interacting with the Visual Intelligence feature. The clip shows a man wearing the headphones and picking up a book with his hand, while the voiceover from Siri explains the function, saying: “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes saveable; if you see something you like, just ask me to save it for later.”
Cameras in the ears… what is the real goal?
It is necessary to clarify that equipping headphones with cameras will not be for the purpose of taking personal photos or documenting trips as some might imagine; rather, the primary goal is to turn the headphones into a smart window that sees what you see, feeding Apple’s Visual Intelligence algorithms with real-time data about your surroundings.

In addition to the video clip, clear instructions were found in the code stating: “For the most accurate information about objects in your surrounding environment, ensure that you do not cover your AirPods,” which confirms that the lenses will need a direct line of sight to scan items and interact with questions you ask Siri directly.
This direction aligns perfectly with Apple’s broader ambitions in the field of smart wearable devices; reports have long indicated the development of smart glasses and an AI pendant, and it seems that the headphones will be the first practical step into this world without waiting for the glasses projects to fully mature.
Name and release date: Are we looking at AirPods Ultra?
Leaks about these headphones are not new; analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and journalist Mark Gurman have spoken about them previously, and expectations suggested they would be delayed until 2027. However, the presence of a complete and ready-to-use video clip within a current system update reinforces the possibility of their release much sooner than expected.

Regarding the naming, there is a division over whether Apple will release them as an entirely new category under the name “AirPods Ultra” to sit above the Pro line, or if it will simply call them the new generation of “AirPods Pro,” or even release them as an additional option named “AirPods Pro with cameras,” similar to how it distinguished previous headphone models.

What is perfectly clear is that Apple is racing against time to integrate artificial intelligence into its entire hardware ecosystem, transforming its standard audio devices into smart sensing tools that accompany the user in every detail of their day.
