It seems history is preparing to repeat itself within Apple’s halls, as the latest leaks from supply chains indicate that the most significant and revolutionary upgrade in camera hardware for the next generation of phones may be exclusive to the largest and most expensive model: the iPhone 18 Pro Max. This move brings to mind the old policy of differentiation between the siblings, leaving fans of the compact size in the regular Pro model with a difficult choice between sacrificing the latest optical hardware or living with giant screen sizes.
A history of engineering differentiation between Pro models
Although Apple is usually keen to achieve feature parity between the Pro and Pro Max phones, history shows previous instances where the larger size had the absolute advantage. We saw this clearly in the iPhone 12 Pro Max when it received a 2.5x optical zoom while the iPhone 12 Pro stopped at 2x. The same scene repeated three years later with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which was the only one to feature the tetraprism lens with 5x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro remained at only 3x zoom.
This disparity was not merely a marketing decision, but was imposed by engineering constraints; the internal space in the larger chassis allows for the integration of complex optical systems that smaller phones cannot accommodate. Although Apple later managed to bring the 5x lens to the iPhone 16 Pro, this required a slight increase in the dimensions of the phone itself to house that hardware.
What is a variable aperture and why is it a real leap?
Since their inception, iPhone cameras have relied on a fixed aperture. Despite the impressive success of software image processing and computational photography features in simulating background blur and exposure adjustment, reality remains unable to compete with the physical laws of real lenses.
Mechanical control of the aperture (f-stop) gives the photographer natural and real background blur (Bokeh) without relying on AI algorithms to separate elements. It also provides precise control over the amount of light entering the sensor to avoid glare or blown-out details in high-brightness daylight scenes, making the optical hardware do the heavy lifting instead of digital processing.
Weibo leaks: Exclusive privileges for the larger beast
According to a new post by the famous leaker Ice Universe on the Weibo platform, Apple plans to limit this advanced lens to the iPhone 18 Pro Max only. The leaks did not stop at the aperture, but also pointed to the development of an optical zoom reaching 6x, which will enable the phone to offer digital zoom with optical-like quality reaching 12x via 48-megapixel sensor cropping technology.
These leaks support previous engineering schematics leaked in the Tata Electronics data incident, which focused details on the iPhone 18 Pro Max without mentioning the smaller model. If the rumors are true that Apple might slightly increase the dimensions of the Max model while keeping the regular model’s size, the technical gap between the two phones could become an unavoidable reality this year.
