“Al-Ketab” App: The only one that corrects Quran recitation offline and with full privacy

Praise be to God. After a long journey and years of technical development, the “Al-Ketab” app returns with a completely new look that redefines the Quran reading experience on smart devices. The app does not just offer digital pages for reading or an audio library of recitations; it transforms into an interactive Quranic companion that leverages the latest processing and artificial intelligence technologies on Apple devices. It provides a revolutionary engine for correcting recitation and tracking memorization, and it is the only app in the world that works entirely on your device without the need for an internet connection, all while maintaining the highest standards of privacy.

From the Phonegram website: A mobile app screen displays a verse from the Holy Quran with options for AI-assisted recitation correction, in addition to listening, review, and memorization features in Arabic.

Correcting recitation on your device… Free AI with complete privacy

The most prominent feature in the major updates to the Al-Ketab app is the listening and instant recitation correction engine; the app listens to your recitation and follows your reading word-for-word in real-time. What is impressive here is that the audio processing, analysis of articulation points (makharij), and diacritics (tashkeel) are performed entirely on the processor of your iPhone or iPad, without sending any recordings to external servers or requiring you to create an account, ensuring that your voice and reading remain solely within your device.

This system allows you to review your reading anywhere, whether you are inside a mosque without a network connection or on a plane while traveling. The app also gives you complete flexibility in determining the level of scrutiny required:

  • No correction: Just for following along and highlighting words during free reading.
  • Easy: To focus on basic words without strictness regarding diacritics.
  • Medium: Checks diacritics and skipped or replaced words.
  • Precise: Strictly checks Shaddahs, Tanween, elongation (Madd) durations, and Tajweed rules.

Furthermore, the app compiles a detailed log at the end of each recitation session, showing words that need review, with the ability to tap on any word to listen to its correct pronunciation in the voice of the chosen reciter and correct the error directly.

Be mindful of where your voice is processed

Apps that send your recitation to the cloud for audio processing can quickly consume your data plan. Not only that, but they may capture and upload more than just your voice, including the voices of those around you or private conversations in the background. Therefore, Al-Ketab processes your recitation entirely on your device and does not upload your voice to any server.

“Teacher” mode and innovative tools for memorization and review

The Al-Ketab app introduces a “Teacher” mode aimed at those who want to master reading without errors; the app pauses automatically when any flaw occurs in word pronunciation or elongation duration, plays the correct pronunciation of the verse, and then waits for you to recite it correctly before moving on to the next. The teacher shows you the subtle difference between what it heard from you and what it expected in terms of text and diacritics.

For those seeking to solidify their memorization, the app provides an exceptional suite of tools that facilitate managing daily portions (Wird):

  • Recite and the app finds you: Simply open the microphone and start reading from any verse in the Mushaf, and the app will immediately recognize your position and open the corresponding page without needing to manually select the Surah or page number.
  • Review and Test mode: Hides the words of the verses and does not reveal each word until you pronounce it correctly with your voice.

  • Whisper feature: If you stop at a word you forgot during recitation, the app immediately whispers its pronunciation to you and returns the microphone to you so you can continue reciting smoothly without having to break your focus to open the Mushaf and search for it.
  • Listen and Repeat: The user listens to the verse in the reciter’s voice, then the app listens to the user’s repetition and corrects them before moving to the next verse.

Al-Ketab Assistant, Khatma management, and Focus mode

The updates did not stop at recitation; the developers added the “Smart Al-Ketab Assistant,” a voice assistant that understands natural language commands. You can speak to the app to play a specific Surah, jump to Ayat al-Kursi, or perform topical searches such as asking for “verses about patience,” fully supported via Siri Shortcuts for quick access.

To ensure the user adheres to their daily program, the app offers a Khatma tracker that allows for setting a timeline and tracking progress page by page, supported by widgets for the lock screen and home screen. It also added a “Focus Mode” that leverages Screen Time to block distracting apps during reading sessions, with an elegant interface that encourages continued engagement with the Mushaf.

From the Phonegram website: A Quran app interface shows 57 minutes of daily reading, 0 minutes of listening, 10 current sessions, and a verse from Surah Al-Isra, celebrating 12 consecutive days of modern Quran reading.

This experience is completed by a massive audio library featuring a selection of top reciters such as Sheikh Saad Al-Ghamdi, Yasser Al-Dosari, Salah Al-Budair, Fares Abbad, Nasser Al-Qatami, and Mustafa Ismail, alongside precise exegeses (Tafsir), led by “Al-Tafsir Al-Muharrar” issued by the Durar Al-Sunniyah Foundation and Al-Tafsir Al-Muyassar, as well as advanced options for customizing font size, Tajweed colors, and full English translation for all interfaces.

The Al-Ketab app is free and non-profit; it is a Waqf for God Almighty. You can contribute to this Waqf by subscribing or by spreading the word about this app, which unfortunately many do not know about. Imagine that for every person who reads the Quran, you receive a reward equal to theirs.
