The Best Features Coming to the iPhone in iOS 27

Apple has finally unveiled the highly anticipated iOS 27 operating system at the WWDC developer conference, an update that redefines how we interact with the iPhone. After last year’s iOS 26 introduced the revolutionary “Liquid Glass” design language (considered the biggest visual change to the iPhone interface since iOS 7), iOS 27 focuses on refining this interface and pushing Apple Intelligence features to entirely new horizons, led by an upgraded, AI-integrated Siri.

The new update will be available for iPhone 11 and later models this fall. According to Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, this update fulfills the major promises the company previously made, introducing the next generation of Siri AI to make Siri smarter and more capable, alongside superior performance improvements and advanced family safety tools.

The All-New Siri Has Arrived (Almost!)

After two years of delays and anticipation, Apple has finally revealed the new generation of its personal assistant, Siri AI. The personal assistant now resides within the Dynamic Island and has become more interactive and proactive than ever before. But it goes beyond just a visual interface improvement; Siri is now powered by custom Google Gemini models that operate via Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.

This upgrade allows Siri to have smart, secure access to user data across various apps such as Messages, Calendar, Mail, Phone, and Music. For example, if you ask Siri to remind you of “that song” a friend sent you weeks ago, Siri will be able to intelligently search your past messages and find the Apple Music link shared with you with complete ease.

Thanks to the integration of Apple’s foundation models with Gemini, Siri now understands text, audio, and images with unprecedented accuracy. A brand-new Siri app has also been launched, which works similarly to ChatGPT, allowing you to browse your past conversations and customize how the assistant speaks in English and other languages. The update is currently available to developers as a beta version and will be available as a public beta for users next July.

Three Revolutionary Editing Tools in the Photos App

Advanced AI photo editing tools in iOS 27

Apple Intelligence didn’t stop with Siri; the Photos app has received a massive boost of AI features through three key new tools: Clean Up, Expand, and Spatial Reframing.

The Clean Up tool is now more skilled at removing complex and distracting elements from the background of photos without distorting essential details. The Expand tool allows you to use AI to extend the background of a photo; if you took a portrait photo, you can intelligently convert it into a wide landscape photo by generating the rest of the background that wasn’t originally there.

The most exciting tool is Spatial Reframing, which borrows technologies from the Apple Vision Pro headset. This tool allows you to adjust the angle of a photo after it has been taken, where you can reset the center and angles and expand the background, giving you the feeling that you have “traveled back in time” to edit your shot and adjust the camera perfectly!

Liquid Glass Interface Matures and iPhone Performance Soars!

After the very successful launch of the Liquid Glass design language last year, Apple comes in iOS 27 to introduce the first major improvements to it. The new version provides better clarity and readability throughout the system thanks to increased contrast and improved glass effect reflections. App icons have been made sharper and more detailed (such as the Maps app), and an all-new slider has been added that allows users to choose the clarity or tint of the interface to suit their tastes.

In terms of performance, iOS 27 provides a super-smooth experience even on older compatible phones. Apple confirms that app launching is 30% faster, new photo loading is 70% faster, and AirDrop file transfer speed has jumped by 80%. This is thanks to Apple optimizing the “CPU Scheduler,” a feature that will make users of modern devices feel supercharged and give older devices (starting from the iPhone 11) a new lease on life and amazing responsiveness.

Visual Intelligence and Connectivity & Network Improvements

Visual intelligence improvements and Siri camera feature

The seventh notable feature in iOS 27 lies in the development of Visual Intelligence through the new “Siri Mode in Camera.” Now, you can open the camera and point it at food to see its nutritional value and ingredients, or automatically split a bill between friends just by scanning it, and even extract events and appointments from advertising posters and add them directly to your calendar.

As for networks and connectivity, the new system makes it easier to switch between cellular data and Wi-Fi, as the phone will intelligently switch to the strongest and most stable connection automatically. To prevent conversation lag in poor network conditions, the system will prioritize sending text first while delaying the sending of heavy photos and videos in the background to avoid chat interruptions.

Additionally, the Photos app now supports sharing shared albums in full resolution without any compression, and AirPods have received a Custom EQ that allows users to adjust and customize audio frequencies to suit their auditory preferences with extreme precision.

Safari, Shortcuts, Passwords App, and Home.. Essential Smart Upgrades

Safari, Shortcuts, and Home app upgrades in iOS 27

The Safari browser has received an excellent upgrade that allows it to automatically organize open pages by topic and content locally on the device. You can also ask Siri to monitor specific web pages via the “Notify You” feature to notify you immediately when the page content changes (such as sold-out concert tickets, flight prices, or product availability).

Regarding the Shortcuts app, you will no longer have to deal with complex steps; you can simply use natural language and give a command to Siri like: “Send my estimated arrival time to my family when I leave work,” and the Shortcuts app will create the shortcut and program it entirely for you. Furthermore, the Passwords app is now capable of automatic login and updating leaked or compromised passwords itself to provide immediate protection for you.

Finally, the Home smart app has received an upgrade that allows recording video clips with compatible surveillance cameras in ultra-high 4K resolution, intelligently saving important clips, and providing instant updates on people’s movements around the house without flooding your phone with repeated and annoying notifications.
