Apple appears determined to introduce its first foldable phone, rumored to be named the iPhone “Ultra,” with an intense dose of exciting engineering technologies. Despite the production challenges the company is facing, the latest leaks indicate that this ultra-thin phone will come equipped with a highly advanced cooling system known as a “Vapor Chamber,” serving as an engineering marvel that combines extreme thinness with stable performance without overheating.

Advanced Cooling in an Ultra-Thin Chassis
According to a new leak from the well-known account “Fixed Focus Digital” on the Chinese platform Weibo, Apple is putting its best efforts into the thermal engineering of the foldable iPhone “Ultra.” This leak is highly intriguing, especially considering the expected extreme thinness of the device, as it is rumored that its thickness when folded will not exceed just 4.5 mm! Phones of this thinness usually suffer from major heat dissipation issues, making the inclusion of a vapor chamber a bold and welcome engineering move.

Apple revolutionized the thermal design of the iPhone 17 Pro last year when it adopted the vapor chamber cooling system for the first time in its phone history. This system circulates a small amount of deionized water to absorb heat away from the A19 Pro processor and distribute it evenly across the phone’s aluminum chassis, giving the device 40% better stable performance compared to previous graphite cooling systems. Interestingly, the ultra-thin iPhone Air does not contain this advanced system, which highlights Apple’s desire to differentiate the foldable Ultra version.
Painful Sacrifices for Killer Thinness
Despite this impressive cooling technology, the extreme thinness Apple is aiming for will force users to make some sacrifices. Rumors suggest that the iPhone “Ultra” may lack five key features available in the iPhone 17 Pro: Face ID, the telephoto lens, MagSafe wireless charging, the Action button, and the physical SIM slot. These concessions are made to ensure the maintenance of the famous 4.5 mm thickness.

Instead of Face ID, expectations suggest that the phone will rely on integrated Touch ID fingerprint technology, and it will also rely on dual cameras instead of triple ones. Although some users may feel disappointed by the absence of a feature like MagSafe in a phone expected to start at $2,000, Apple believes that offering a foldable phone as thin as a stone is the top priority that will attract fans of luxury and artistic distinction.
Production Issues… But the Launch Date Remains Fixed
The manufacturing process for this revolutionary iPhone is not without complex engineering obstacles. Recently, multiple reports have indicated production difficulties in the initial assembly stages, particularly related to Surface Mount Technology (SMT). This is in addition to previous leaks that spoke of the screen hinge failing to pass Apple’s rigorous quality tests under high-frequency opening and closing conditions.

However, these challenges do not appear to be delaying the anticipated launch date. Renowned journalist Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has confirmed that the iPhone “Ultra” is still on track to be unveiled next September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The phone is expected to come with a massive 7.8-inch internal screen and a 5.5-inch external cover screen, along with the upcoming A20 processor and the all-new C2 connectivity modem.
