We all know this dilemma: you find a great app on your iPhone, and you really want to take advantage of its full features, but you are hit with a high monthly subscription price. Developers usually offer an attractive discount if you choose the annual subscription, but that means paying a huge amount upfront. To solve this problem, Apple has introduced a smart solution in the App Store that allows developers to offer discounted annual subscriptions, but with the option to pay in monthly installments! Yes, you get the discounted annual price, but you pay it in convenient monthly installments. Sounds like an amazing deal, right? Well, it does sound great, but as usual with Apple, there are hidden conditions and details you need to pay close attention to.

What is the “Annual Commitment with Monthly Billing” feature?
In late April, Apple launched a new payment option in the App Store called “Monthly Subscriptions with a 12-Month Commitment.” The idea is simple and very innovative: instead of the user paying the full annual subscription value upfront to get the discount, they can now subscribe to the annual plan and get the discounted price, with that amount split into 12 equal monthly payments.

This feature offers a double benefit; the user gets the service at a discounted price without having to drain their budget all at once, and the developer ensures a steady and stable cash flow for a full year instead of traditional monthly subscriptions that the user can cancel at any time with the click of a button. It is worth noting that this new system does not change Apple’s standard commission; the company will continue to collect its usual percentage of the amounts paid by the user to the developer, meaning the developer is the one offering the discount and bearing the cost, not Apple itself.
Condition One: What happens if you decide to cancel the subscription early?

And here lie the important details you must be wary of; monthly payment does not mean absolute freedom to leave whenever you want! When you agree to a 12-month commitment plan, you are signing a binding financial contract. If you decide to cancel the subscription after four months, for example, it does not mean you will stop paying; rather, Apple will continue to deduct the remaining eight installments monthly from your account until the end of the year, and your cancellation of the subscription only means you do not wish to renew it for another year when it ends.
As for if you try to evade payment or your payment method fails to cover the installments, Apple is very clear and strict on this matter: your access to the app’s paid features will be cut off immediately. Not only that, but your App Store account will be partially frozen, and you will not be able to purchase or download any other apps or services until you update your payment information and pay the amounts owed. The only nice feature here is that if you decide to upgrade your subscription to a higher tier during the commitment period, you will receive a prorated refund for the unused days of the current month.
Condition Two: The feature is not available to everyone, nor everywhere!

The big surprise in Apple’s announcement is the complete exclusion of users in the United States and Singapore from this new system, as developers will not be able to offer the annual installment option to users in these two countries without a clear official reason from the company. News reports indicate that this exclusion in America may be related to the ongoing legal battles with Epic Games over App Store policies, while in Singapore, the reason may be due to the very strict consumer protection laws there, which impose complex restrictions on long-term financial commitment contracts.
Beyond this geographical exception, it should be noted that the feature is not limited to iPhones only; developers can enable it in the App Stores for iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and even the Vision Pro headset. For these options to appear, your devices must be running iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, or later versions that support this new software feature.
