A mistake when reporting a broken iPhone Duo screen could cost you hundreds of dollars

What if you discovered that your cracked iPhone Duo screen isn’t the only problem you need to worry about, and that trying to fix it could cost you $999? With the escalation of the “Crackgate” crisis (referring to the numerous complaints about cracks appearing on the screen of Apple’s foldable phone), unexpected details have begun to emerge regarding how Apple handles damaged devices. This reveals that the path to repairing the screen may not be as simple as users imagine, and that one single step you take could lead you to pay a lot of money instead of getting a free repair. Let’s learn about the mistake you must avoid when reporting a broken iPhone Duo screen, as it will cost you hundreds of dollars.

What is the Crackgate crisis?

The Crackgate crisis (Crackgate) can be described as a wave of complaints that emerged after the launch of the foldable iPhone Duo, where a number of users posted photos of their screens suffering from similar cracks near the hinge, in almost the same area. Worryingly, some of these cases appeared just a few hours after purchasing the phone; one user even reported the crack occurring after opening the device fewer than 20 times, without any clear signs of it being dropped or subjected to impact. Although Apple has acknowledged a problem affecting a limited number of iPhone Duo devices and advised owners of affected devices to contact AppleCare for a replacement device, it has not disclosed the technical cause of the cracks.

If it is proven that the internal screen crack is caused by a manufacturing defect, Apple is supposed to repair it for free without charging the owner. But here lies the problem that many users have fallen into, inadvertently incurring financial losses. Contacting Apple support by phone leads to submitting an express device replacement request, a procedure that automatically triggers the $99 fee for accidental damage under AppleCare+ coverage. As for users who do not have AppleCare+ coverage, they would need to pay a cost of up to $999 to repair the damaged screen.

Why is it recommended to visit an Apple Store?

From Phonegram: The entrance to an Apple Store features a white Apple logo on a reflective pillar, where visitors often go to seek help for a broken iPhone screen; this entrance is located between water fountains inside a glass building.

You might wonder what the solution is so you can get the phone screen repaired for free without paying any money. The answer, my friend, is very simple; all you have to do is follow these steps:

  • Head to an official Apple Store and request an appointment at the Genius Bar if available in your country, or to an Apple Authorized Service Provider if there is no official store.

  • Request an inspection of the screen and documentation of the cause of the crack, while emphasizing that you suspect a manufacturing defect.

  • Keep clear photos of the screen and record the details of how the problem appeared and the circumstances that preceded it.

  • Do not agree to register the case as accidental damage or to an express paid replacement request before understanding the procedure, the cost, and confirming whether the defect is covered by the warranty.

Finally, Apple will not easily admit that your phone’s screen crack is caused by a manufacturing defect, and the damage might be attributed to you dropping the device. Therefore, you should record the details of what happened just before the damage appeared, including how you used the phone and whether it was subjected to drops or impacts. Most importantly, avoid any attempt to contact customer service by phone, and go directly to an authorized Apple center to clarify that the fault lies with the company.
