Update is iOS 18.1 It's the first iOS 18 update to include Apple's AI capabilities, and that's what most of the media coverage of the new update has focused on. If you have an iPhone that doesn't support Apple's AI features, you might be wondering what features this update offers you.

Although Apple's smart features make up the bulk of the new features, users of older devices will also get nice improvements, including:

Recording phone calls

From iPhoneIslam.com, a screenshot of the phone interface on an iPhone, showing call recording options and settings, with buttons for volume, FaceTime, and contacts. A red arrow highlights the interface.

In the iOS 18.1 update, you can record any phone call you make, with the audio recording saved in the Notes app.

To use call recording, simply tap the sound wave icon in the top corner during a call. You cannot record the call surreptitiously, but all participants will be notified that recording is in progress via an automated message.

Your recorded calls are saved in the Notes app. You can play the entire call or get the transcript, and you can search for any part you want.

AirPods Features

From iPhoneIslam.com, these white wireless earbuds with silicone ear tips are shown against a background of multi-colored sound wave graphics, fully compatible with iOS 18.1 and designed to harness Apple's intelligence for an exceptional audio experience.

The new update adds health features to AirPods Pro 2. You can access all the new hearing health features available in the iOS 18.1 update. Now you can use the headphones to take a hearing test, and if you discover that you have a “mild or moderate” hearing loss, you can use the headphones as a hearing aid to help you hear better.

AirPods Pro 2 can also be used to protect your hearing, as Apple has added an important feature to protect your ears from loud noises. When you are in a place with loud, annoying sounds, the headphones will automatically reduce these sounds to protect your hearing. However, this feature only works with continuous sounds and not sudden sounds such as fireworks, gunshots, and power drills.

To take advantage of all these new features, you only need three things: AirPods Pro 2 updated to the latest version, an iPhone running iOS 18, or an iPad running iPadOS 18.

Search the App Store

From iPhoneIslam.com, two smartphones running iOS 18.1 display App Store search results for racing games. The left iPhone displays “Fubo,” while the right iPhone highlights “CSR 2 - Realistic Drag Racing” among other options, showing Apple’s intelligence in selecting the best gaming experiences.

Previously, searching in the Apple App Store was based on specific keywords. But with the new update, you can now search the same way you speak in your daily life, and this is called “natural language search.” For example, you can type “I want a fun new game,” “Apps that help me learn new skills,” “Kids-friendly cooking games,” “Best games in the world,” and so on.

In short, you can now search for apps and games the same way you would ask a friend. The system is smarter at understanding what you want, even if you don't use the exact keywords.

Small new features

There are some other minor improvements:

◉ Control Center: You can add separate buttons for AirDrop and satellite calling, as well as controls for the measurement and level tools.

◉ Wallet: The Wallet app no longer displays your savings account balance on the Apple Card home screen, you need to tap it to get this information.

Bug fixes

◉ Podcasts: Don't mark unplayed podcast episodes as playing.

◉ Photos: Fixed the video choppiness issue when controlling the playback speed of 4K videos at 60fps in the Photos app. Now the forward and rewind motion will be smooth and responsive without any lag or choppiness.

◉ Car Keys: If you were having an issue where your car wouldn't start or unlock using the digital key with automatic unlocking, this has been fixed in the new update.

◉ Other fixes.
