Activity competitions

WatchOS 5 now allows users to invite other Apple Watch users to compete in a weekly Activity competition, where they earn points for completing Activity rings with training notifications encouraging them to win the competition of the week.


Automatic learning of exercises

The automatic workout recognition feature provides a notification to start the correct workout for the most popular exercises on Apple Watch, and adds a back-to-back workout credit if you start the exercise without registering on the watch. This feature also provides a reminder to end exercise sessions after a period of inactivity in case the user has forgotten to end them.


New exercises

Apple has added yoga and long walks to 12 custom workouts, to accurately track the watch's active calories burned and exercise minutes gained.


New running features

WatchOS 5 brings high-performance features to joggers, including a new cadence meter (number of steps per minute) for running and walking, as well as a new jogging speed alarm that alerts users when they are late or ahead of their target. An all-new gauge, Accumulated Speed, is also available as an additional option for runners to find their previous kilometer speed in addition to their current or average speed.


Direct call feature (Walkie-Talkie)

It's a whole new way to communicate by voice, with just a flick of your wrist. It is an easy and fun way to quickly communicate with relatives and friends. It works through direct connection between watches, is characterized by speed and personal character, and can be activated between users of compatible Apple watches around the world via Wi-Fi or mobile service.

Note (The Walkie-Talkie feature is not available in China, United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan.)


Podcast posts

Apple Watch users can now listen to their favorite podcasts anywhere with the Apple Podcast app on the watch, with the ability to play any podcast using Siri. The episodes are automatically synced to the Apple Watch, and when you listen to them on other devices, the app automatically updates them to get the latest episodes.


Siri updates on Apple Watch

Thanks to machine learning technology, the Apple Watch face has become a better personal assistant, providing predictive and proactive shortcuts during the day based on routine, location, and information such as post-workout heart rate, travel times with Maps at the right time of the day, and match results for your favorite team. The Siri watch face also displays content that you can interact with from third-party apps.


Notifications booster

Third-party app notifications can now contain interactive controls, and they can be used without the need to open apps. For example, the appointment and the number of invitees can be modified in a reservation notification from the Yelp app through the same notice.


Student ID cards

The Apple Watch will replace the student ID card. With a movement of the wrist, students can enter the library, student dormitories and events, pay snacks, laundry and dinner around campus by simply adding ID cards to the wallet app on Apple Watch.

Note (This feature will be 'launched in the fall' to work with universities in America) 


WatchOS 5 will be available this fall as a free update for Apple Watch Series 1 or later and requires an iPhone 5s or later with at least iOS 12.
